FAQs

Why do you do this program in the heat of the summer?
Good question...  The program always has been in the summer because the target race is the NCRC Women's Distance Festival, a women's only 5K, in September.  It has worked for most participants so we just stick with it.

Do I have to run?
Not necessarily... While the goal is to help women run their first 5K, the ultimate goal is to complete the 5K at your own pace and injury free.  All training is based on the run/walk interval model that is very popular.

Do I have to be a member of NC Roadrunners Club to participate in this program?
You do not need to be a member of the NC Roadrunners Club to register for the program, but you will receive a one-year NCRC membership as part of the program fee.  Membership in NCRC provides you the latest news on running in our area and discounts with local merchants.

How do I know what group I should be in?
Below are some detailed questions to guide you to the appropriate group. Remember - we want you to become a life long enthusiast of running!  You should pick a manageable goal and then take your time working to the next level. If you do not currently have a regular exercise program we encourage you to begin walking around your neighborhood three times a week right now.

Suggested Guidelines to Selecting a Training Group:
  • Group A:
    • Walk/jog consistently 4-5 times per week and/or participate in some kind of fitness activity 1-2 times per week (spinning, biking, Zumba, etc.)
    • Can walk 2 miles or longer
    • No current medical conditions (asthma, high blood pressure, joint/back/muscle difficulties)
  • Group B:
    • Walk consistently 2-3 times per week and/or participate in other fitness activity 1-2 times per week (spinning, biking, Zumba, etc.)
    • Can walk for at least 30 minutes at a brisk pace
    • No current medical conditions
  • Group C:
    • Walk consistently 2-3 times per week
    • No current medical conditions
  • Group D:
    • Very little walking for exercise or other fitness activity in the last 6 months
    • Never tried running
    • Have history of knee, foot or back pain
(Please note:  Each group will have volunteers that will pace the group.  If you are unable to stay with the available pace group(s) you may be advised to move to a different group.  Please be aware that coaches are trying to meet your training needs to the best of their ability.)

What happens at the training?
You will be matched with a coaches/volunteers in an appropriate pace group.  The groups will leave from the designated location and complete an interval-based training run for a specified distance.  The coaches/volunteers will be able to show stretching techniques and proper hydration.  Coaches and volunteers are available to answer any questions you may have.

What is included in the fee?
You will receive the following:
  • 4 weekly runs
  • Informational clinics (footwear, nutrition, injury prevention, self-defense, etc.)
  • Unlimited access to experienced coaches and enthusiastic volunteers!
  • Training schedule and informational handouts
  • Technical shirt
  • Graduation dinner and certificate
  • Membership in the NC Roadrunners Club for one year

Can I bring my daughter? Son? Husband? Dog?
You are welcome to bring any female who is 10 years old and over and is a registered participant.  Please keep in mind that for anyone under 18 a legal guardian must be present. As far as the others... they will just have to find something else to do during our training, as this is a women's only program.
